Fun in the Sun

I can't believe there's only a couple days left of July. Where did this Summer go?! I'm so glad I actually got a chance to leave the city for 4 days and relax by the beach. We went to Avalon, New Jersey or "down the shore" as people say around these parts. I think this was actually my first real beach TRIP, because growing up in Newport, Rhode Island, everything around us was a beach so I never really appreciated it as much as I do now. Just to be able to breathe fresh ocean air, and do outdoorsy stuff is so opposite from what I do on a daily basis in Philly, that it's pretty thrilling. So an obvious thing about me, is I'm very pale...as in my skin does not turn tan. I can get sunburned on a 5 minute walk to the store. It sucks, but it's something I've come to accept. There are some steps I have to take before being out in the sun all day. Here's some ideas for other pale girls out there, because you're not alone (and for those who have darker skin too, because the sun does affect everyone!).

Kerastase Suncare Duo: Kerastase is by far my favorite haircare line. It is super expensive, so yeah
I usually use Herbal Essences, but back when I worked at a salon and got a good discount on hair products, I couldn't get enough of this stuff. You can actully feel a difference, man.
Sun Bum: I love Sun Bum products, so I included a sunscreen and also a lip balm with SPF 30 in it. My favorite is coconut, it actually tastes as good as it smells. You can find Sun Bum in most surf shops.
Neutrogena Beach Defense: I used this (SPF 70) over the weekend, and didn't get burnt. I also did apply it several times throughout day.
Neutrogena Gentle Soothing Lotion: A good way to get a basic layer of protection on your face is to
get a moisturizer that has SPF built in. It's something you're gonna put on after you wash your face every morning anyways, so it's like killing two birds with one stone.
Banana Boat Aloe Mist: A great little product that smells good and feels great to spray on skin right after being in sun. If you have a little bit of a burn, this will give some temporary relief.
Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray: Another of my favorite hair products, the Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray gives hair that beachy wavy feel, so even if you're not near a beach you can still get somewhat of a surfer girl look goin on.

For a full list of the best suncare products to choose from,
try visiting HSN's skincare section. They have everything under the sun (literally) from serums, to lip balms, moisturizers, etc! A couple of items I'd like to try are
the Perlier Black Rice Face Cream, Nyakio Hydrating Face Oil and  the Wei East Algae Face Wash...

Here are some cute bathing suits that offer a little more protection from the sun.
I personally love one pieces because I'm too self conscious to wear some
little string bikini all over the place. A thrift shop is a great place to find a cheap, one of a kind
bathing suit that no one else is gonna have on. All of my bathing suits are vintage/thrifted which is great
but I do run into a little trouble with fit sometimes (too small on top and too baggy on bottom for me), so make sure you try walking around at home in your new suit before you actually go to beach and have a wardrobe malfunction!

Another fun way to protect yourself from sun is with accessories. These provide protection of body areas
that may be overlooked, such as scalp, eyes, and tops of feet! Have you ever had a bad burn on your scalp?? Not only does it hurt like hell, but it will start peeling after a couple days and then it looks like you've got a bad case of dandruff. Also, sunburn on the tops of your feet SUCK. So here's some cute little beach shoes, and even a pair of Vans slip ons that are easy and comfortable to walk around in. Also shown are some floppy straw hats that add some shade for the face, and some oversized sunglasses that will protect your eyes and keep you looking fly.

Falling asleep on the beach is one of the worst things you can do to yourself.
When I know I'm going to be sitting in the hot sun for a while, I make sure to pack some stuff to keep myself busy. Whether it be a good book (I just read these two Wally Lamb books and they are perfect beach reads), a notepad or sketchbook, like the Fashionary, a cool magazine, or an Ipad, give yourself something to do. I've also included the Nars makeup remover (so you don't come out of ocean looking like a raccoon), some Alterna Mango Dry Shampoo to sprinkle on  hair after swimming, and some Sex Wax for your board if you're into surfing. Oh and a big bottle of water to stay hydrated with!!
I have a weird obsession with towels and blankets. I think it's mostly because they're just big
pieces of fabric and I love prints/fabrics/materials. I literally have a hard time leaving Target without buying a new towel or fluffy blanket. Many of your favorite brands have logo towels like this Unif one, and I know Wildfox, Thrasher, etc all have cool towels. Also, most beach towns will have some type of tourist trap that sells cool patterned blankets and towels for cheap.

This collage doesn't really focus on sun protection, but I found these sick Cynthia Rowley wetsuits and I couldn't NOT put them in here somewhere. I also added a couple Roxy items because Roxy will always have a soft spot in my heart. Although I don't surf myself, it's something I always wished I knew how to do
and props to anyone that gets out there and learns how to do it. Also, I don't know what's up with all these little tiny skateboards that are super popular in the suburbs/beach towns, but some are actually really cute.
We saw someone eat SHIT on one and he tried to catch himself on a trash can but he just ripped the top of the trash can off and took it down with him and his board shot across the sidewalk and almost knocked a lady off her beach cruiser. I can't believe I didn't get it on film because it was too good to be true.

See?? I'm wearing a vintage one piece, a straw hat, huge sunglassses!

This was our first day in Avalon, checkin out the jetty.

Adam bought me the coolest thing that was available in town....this Element sweater with elephants all over it. It's my new favorite sweater!

We hung out at the Sea Isle skatepark a lot. I took a lot of sick shots of Adam doin his thing...the little kids were lovin' it.
